Last Days of August...

Summer is clearly coming to an end (how can that be??!?!).

After a heat wave throughout last week and some heavy thunderstorms this weekend, it was definitely more fall weather than summer today (time to get the trench coat out!)

Still... there were some great summer moments this weekend.

We visited our friends today and they have the most amazing plants on their terrace and around the garden. I love their place! Take a look:

Chris showed us the pizza oven he is  building!
How cool is that? .... VERY! :)
(can't wait for the first home made, wood-fired-oven pizza....yummy....)

Here are some more "summer impressions" from this weekend:

Jamón Serrano with Spanish Olives, Parmeganio Cheese and Olive baguette

On Friday it was so blazing hot that we both didn't feel like cooking dinner. So we sat outside in the garden and enjoyed this simple but delicous meal:

Jamón serrano (Spanish ham), spanish olives, parmesan cheese, fresh olive-baguette and a bottle of our favorite Italian red wine.

Incredible Shade Illusion...

Watch this! It's unbelievable. Thanks to a certain shadow effect, our brain turns a gray square into a white one....

A heart-warming article about Steve Job's resignation and what it meant to people...

 photo © Paul Sakuma/Associated Press

In the wake of Job's resignation and the many headlines this elicited, I found this article in the NY Times by Clair Caine Miller really heart-warming because she adressed the "emotional" side of the matter and the phenomen of the "affection" (if you can call it that) that people have for the man who MADE Apple what it is today.

Wishing you all the best Mr. Job and THANKS for everything you gave to us!

Reactivating an old "acquaintance"...

Yesterday evening I dragged out this "old acquaintance" of mine...(up on the attic)...

dragged out of the corner to be used again :)

I haven't used my cross trainer in over a year and I would have preferred a jog through the park instead, but thanks to a rather scary thunderstorm rolling in (and it WAS like dooms day outside), I opted for the trusted excercise machine instead.

scary, isn't it? No weather to be outside and running... right?

Doing cardio excercise up on the attic with a room temperature of 32 °C  is...uhm... shall we say a bit on the sweaty side (even before having made a single step!)

Still... I felt great after the 40 minutes workout.

Now that the cross trainer is out in the open again, I'm sure, I'll use it more in the future (especially when the weather gets cold and nasty again with the fall season setting in).

PS: Found out my iPad fits perfectly on the console of the cross trainer.
(Now.... watching Don Flack and & Co. solving crimes while sweating on the excercise machine is a nice distraction :)

Flapjack Baked Plums with Crème Fraîche...

What we had for dessert today...

...add a dollop of crème fraîche to it and you're in heaven ...

Go here for the recipe!

Encounter on a Sunday Morning...

Took a  walk into town this morning and came across this cute fellow enjoying the early morning rays of sunshine. Talking about Sunday "bliss" :)

The owner of the cat (and the Italian Café he runs) let me have a Cappuccino even though his café wasn't to open for another two hours :)

Beautiful Sunrise....

The sight outside our bathroom window this morning :)

Izz has mad assembly skills....

The cute little white side table which I ordered Friday, arrived today.
Since Best Hubby in the World is away on a business trip, I discovered my "mad assembly skills" :)

House Project: Front Yard Paving

Done with the paving :)

We Need to Talk about Kevin

Could not put it down!

Awesome read about a fictional school massacre, written from the perspective of the killer's mother, Eva Khatchadourian. It is both, compelling and thoughtful.

I love the narrative pace with which Shriver leads through this novel.

House Project: The Digger is back...

...started on the front yard.

We were hoping to get it finished this weekend, however... we ran out of stones *head desk* (we're only approx.  2 square meters short but the company we got them from, they don't work Saturdays *sigh* )

Well... hopefully it'll get done next week then (Can't wait to get the plants and all....)

I'm planning to plant a tree in the middle of that little island in the front, so it's gonna look a bit like  this one in the backyard.

Riots in UK

 This  just makes me sick!

Watching a bunch of masked youngsters running around looting and burning down buildings, bringing chaos and mayhem over the city, it's unbelievable, really!  They have no respect whatsoever for other people or their properties.

A friend from Birmingham told me they even wanted to burn down a Children’s Hospital for Christ’s sake.

What is wrong with these people? This is no game! This is real life, real people that get hurt.

And all this over a drug dealer who may or may not have been shot accidentally by police men when they tried to bust him. Sorry, don't expect too much sympathy from me for a man who had several run ins with the law and was a known drug dealer and gang member.

Sad what the world has come to. My deepest sympathy for the innocent and honest citizens who suffer at the hands of these useless thugs and for the police men who risk their own safety to protect the people from this madness.

Sometimes I miss you so much...

...  I put on your favorite sweat jacket, even though it is three sizes too big for me, because it is soft, cuddly and smells of you...

Love you, baby!
